Applying through the Embassy involves, first of all, filling up of a Visa application form by the applicant. You are then required to submit this filled form along with your one recent passport sized photograph; one self-addressed envelope and the original passport at the Embassy. With the submission of all these documents, you will also have to make payments for Visa fees. You can pay this fee either via money order or through cashier’s check. The processing of your documents at the Embassy will get completed in at least five working days. After the successful completion of all the previous steps, the Embassy will issue you a fully stamped Visa.
Although this option endows you with the benefit of owning a fully stamped Visa before leaving to Vietnam, it also involves considerable expenses on your travelling and stay. The Embassy of Vietnam is located in New Delhi, and this entire process requires you to visit the Embassy multiple times. And to make this feasible, you will have to encounter certain expenses.
Moreover, if your plan is to go for correspondence by sending the documents through the postal mail, this is also not free of risks. You could lose all your important documents during transit if the entire package sent by you get misplaced or lost.

A better and simpler approach to acquire Visa for Vietnam is to go for Visa on Arrival method. Here, first of all, you will have to get in touch with a reliable travel agent based in Vietnam. After contacting the travel agent, you will be required to fill up and submit an online application form. The form involves a number of fields collecting information regarding your name, occupation, purpose and duration of visit, etc. While filling up the purpose of visit section in the online form, you will be required to choose from business, tourist and transit options. The Business Visa provides you with a validity of one month, three months or six months. One-month validity is provided by a Tourist Visa, and Transit Visa endows you with less than five days validity.
A letter of approval will be issued to you after the successful processing of your application. You or your travel agent can collect this letter of approval. Once you reach Vietnam, you should submit this letter of approval to the Visa on Arrival counter of your landing airport. Along with this submission, you will also be required to pay the Visa stamping fee so that you can successfully collect your Visa on Arrival document.
One important thing to note is that this option is available only for those travelers who arrive in Vietnam by air. The travelers following some other route i.e. land or water route must carry all their documents with them while travelling.
